The roots of a geological Union for the fut
ure of the Earth
A virtual roundtable, organized by the International Co
mmission on the History of Geological Sciences (INHIGEO) for the celebratio
ns of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the International Union
of Geological Sciences (IUGS), will concern the history of the Internationa
l Geological Congresses (IGC) within the development of the geologica
l sciences from the late 19th century to the end of the 20th century. Withi
n this historical context also the need for a scientific union was debated
by the participants and led to the proposal of the International Union of G
eological Sciences. This application was also supported by UNESCO. The pivo
tal role of the IGCs was considered by the International Council of Scienti
fic Unions (ISCU) as an endorsement for the immediate acceptance of the IUG
S membership in 1961.
The aim of this event is to emphasize the role of the IGCs for th
e idea of the foundation of the IUGS and for its development from the 1960s
onward. Examining society’s changing relationships with the geoscien
ces and evolution of geoscience solutions presented at these IGCs addressin
g pressing global challenges of their time. It will pose the question of wh
at role do the geological unions have in shaping the future of the planet.<
