SUMMARY:The history of the International Geological Congresses
LOCATION:webinar online
DESCRIPTION: \nThe roots of a geological Union for the future of the Earth\n\nA virtual
roundtable, organized by the International Commission on the History of Ge
ological Sciences (INHIGEO) for the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of
the establishment of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS)
, will concern the history of the International Geological Congresses (IGC)
within the  development of the geological sciences from the late 19th cent
ury to the end of the 20th century. Within this historical context also the
need for a scientific union was debated by the participants and led to the
proposal of the International Union of Geological Sciences. This applicati
on was also supported by UNESCO. The pivotal role of the IGCs was considere
d by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ISCU) as an endorsemen
t for the immediate acceptance of the IUGS membership in 1961.\nThe aim of
this event is to emphasize the role of the IGCs for the idea of the foundat
ion of the IUGS and for its development from the 1960s onward.  Examining s
ociety’s changing relationships with the geosciences and evolution of geosc
ience solutions presented at these IGCs addressing pressing global challeng
es of their time. It will pose the question of what role do the geological
unions have in shaping the future of the planet.\n\nModerators: Ezio Vaccar
i (INHIGEO President) and Martina Kölbl-Ebert (INHIGEO Secretary-General)\n
\nOpening address: John Ludden (IUGS President)   \nSpeakers: Beris Cox (UK
), Marianne Klemun (Austria), Kathleen Histon (Ireland), Philippe Le Vigour
oux (France), Zdeňka Petáková (Czech Republic), David Orenstein (Canada), T
oshihiro Yamada (Japan), Jiuchen Zhang (China).\n\n \nSee the program at ht
