Within this historical context also the need for a scientific union was debated by the participants and led to the proposal of the International Union of Geological Sciences. This applicati on was also supported by UNESCO. The pivotal role of the IGCs was considere d by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ISCU) as an endorsemen t for the immediate acceptance of the IUGS membership in 1961.\nThe aim of this event is to emphasize the role of the IGCs for the idea of the foundat ion of the IUGS and for its development from the 1960s onward.  Examining s ociety’s changing relationships with the geosciences and evolution of geosc ience solutions presented at these IGCs addressing pressing global challeng es of their time.
