ranco-Allemand ANR-DFG "EUCLIDES --- Euclid in the Modern Age: A History of
Cross-Cultural Transmissions, Translations and Transformations of the Elem
ents".
o De Risi, Catherine Goldstein, Antoni Malet, Thomas Morel, Volker Remmert,

ll start on October 1, 2024, and will last 36 months, with a monthly salary
of around 2135 €. To be eligible, candidates must hold a Master’s degree (
in France, an M2), obtained by September 2024 at the latest. The doctoral p
rogram will take place either at École doctorale 623 of Université Paris Ci
té (in history and philosophy of science), or at École doctorale 280 of Uni
versité Panthéon-Sorbonne (in philosophy), depending on the subject of the
dissertation. The student will receive a PhD degree from one of these two i
nstitutions. The student will be affiliated with the Laboratoire SPHère in
Paris, one of Europe's leading research centers in the history and philosop
hy of science, and will participate actively in the Institute’s seminars.\n
The working languages of the Laboratoire SPHère are French and English, and
the dissertation must be written in one of these two languages. The positi
on is solely dedicated to research, with no teaching and minimal administra
tive duties. Fellows are expected to participate in the cultural and scient
ifc life of the Laboratoire SPHère, to advance their own research projects
and to contribute actively to the Institute's research. The candidate is re
quired to reside in Paris for the three years of the doctoral program, with
the exception of research periods abroad.\nThe PhD student will be enrolle
d in the ANR-DFG "EUCLIDES" project, run in collaboration between the Labor
atoire SPHère and the University of Wuppertal in Germany, aimed at studying
the tradition of Euclid's Elements from the 16th to the 19th century. This
is arguably the most important and widely circulated work of classical mat
hematics, and by studying its transformations throughout its editions, tran
slations and commentaries and its pedagogical and practical uses, the resea
rch team involved in the project seeks to establish an overarching and inte
rdisciplinary narrative regarding the modern tradition of the Elements and
its unparalleled impact on the history of science, knowledge and culture. S
cholars primarily involved in the project are Angela Axworty, Sara Confalon
ieri, Vincenzo De Risi, Catherine Goldstein, Antoni Malet, Thomas Morel, Vo
lker Remmert, Sabine Rommevaux, and Benjamin Wardhaugh.\nIn particular, thi
s doctoral fellowship should be devoted to the study of logical and epistem
ological problems related to the foundations of mathematics in the editions
of Euclid's Elements in the modern age.\nPossible, but not exclusive, rese
arch topics are as follows:\n- The history of axiomatic thought in the earl
y modern age, and the modern discussion of the various principles that grou
nd mathematics: defnitions, axioms, postulates, and more.\n- The history of
modern logic in relation to the developments in mathematical thought. Atte
mpts to reduce Euclid's Elements into syllogisms. Attempts to formalize non
-syllogistic logical inferences coming from the demonstrative practice of m
athematicians. \n- The history of the theory of demonstration and science i
n relation to the scientifc ideal embodied in Euclid's Elements. The Quaest
io de certitudine mathematicarum and its developments.\n- The contamination
s between Euclid's demonstrative practice and Scholastic, Renaissance and m
odern theories of science (Descartes, Hobbes, Leibniz, Kant, etc.).\n- The
relationship between the history of Euclid's Elements and the history of sy
mbolic mathematics, algebraic geometry, and attempts at a "geometric charac
teristics."\nSpecial attention will be paid to the history of the use of di
agrams in the tradition of Euclid's Elements, the transformations of this p
ractice over the centuries, and the epistemological theories concerning the
possibility or necessity of making diagrammatic demonstrations related to
sensibility or imagination.\nAny research project that focuses on these, or
similar, themes will be considered by members of the research team and eva
luated for funding. Although the topics are many and varied, it is still es
sential that the history of Euclid's editions of the Elements play an impor
tant role in the research project.\nThe doctoral thesis will be carried out
under the supervision of Vincenzo De Risi, of the Laboratoire SPHère, and
other specialists in the research themes.\nThe following documents are requ
ired from the candidate:\n1) CV\n2) A proposal for the research project the
student wishes to carry out over the three-year period (max. 5 pages). It
may be written in French, English, German or Italian.\n3) A sample text, ap
prox. 10-20 pages, written by the candidate on the history or philosophy of
science (e.g., a section of the Master's thesis).\n4) If the student does
not yet hold a master's degree, a letter from a faculty member stating that
it is likely that they will graduate by September 2024.\nApplication websi

these two institutions. The student will be affiliated with the Laboratoir
e SPHère in Paris, one of Europe's leading research centers in the history
and philosophy of science, and will participate actively in the Institute’s
 seminars.

The working languages of the Laboratoire SPHère are French
and English, and the dissertation must be written in one of these two lang
uages. The position is solely dedicated to research, with no teaching and m
inimal administrative duties. Fellows are expected to participate in the cu
ltural and scientifc life of the Laboratoire SPHère, to advance their own r
esearch projects and to contribute actively to the Institute's research. Th
e candidate is required to reside in Paris for the three years of the docto
ral program, with the exception of research periods abroad.

The PhD s
tudent will be enrolled in the ANR-DFG "EUCLIDES" project, run in collabora
tion between the Laboratoire SPHère and the University of Wuppertal in Germ
any, aimed at studying the tradition of Euclid's Elements from the 16th to
the 19th century. This is arguably the most important and widely circulated
work of classical mathematics, and by studying its transformations through
out its editions, translations and commentaries and its pedagogical and pra
ctical uses, the research team involved in the project seeks to establish a
n overarching and interdisciplinary narrative regarding the modern traditio
n of the Elements and its unparalleled impact on the history of science, kn
owledge and culture. Scholars primarily involved in the project are Angela
Axworty, Sara Confalonieri, Vincenzo De Risi, Catherine Goldstein, Antoni M
alet, Thomas Morel, Volker Remmert, Sabine Rommevaux, and Benjamin Wardhaug
h.

In particular, this doctoral fellowship should be devoted to the s
tudy of logical and epistemological problems related to the foundations of
mathematics in the editions of Euclid's Elements in the modern age.

P
ossible, but not exclusive, research topics are as follows:

- The his
tory of axiomatic thought in the early modern age, and the modern discussio
n of the various principles that ground mathematics: defnitions, axioms, po
stulates, and more.

- The history of modern logic in relation to the
developments in mathematical thought. Attempts to reduce Euclid's Elements
into syllogisms. Attempts to formalize non-syllogistic logical inferences c
oming from the demonstrative practice of mathematicians.

- The
history of the theory of demonstration and science in relation to the scien
tifc ideal embodied in Euclid's Elements. The Quaestio de certitudine mathe
maticarum and its developments.

- The contaminations between Euclid's
demonstrative practice and Scholastic, Renaissance and modern theories of
science (Descartes, Hobbes, Leibniz, Kant, etc.).

- The relationship
between the history of Euclid's Elements and the history of symbolic mathem
atics, algebraic geometry, and attempts at a "geometric characteristics."</
p>
Special attention will be paid to the history of the use of diagrams i
n the tradition of Euclid's Elements, the transformations of this practice
over the centuries, and the epistemological theories concerning the possibi
lity or necessity of making diagrammatic demonstrations related to sensibil
ity or imagination.

Any research project that focuses on these, or si
milar, themes will be considered by members of the research team and evalua
ted for funding. Although the topics are many and varied, it is still essen
tial that the history of Euclid's editions of the Elements play an importan
t role in the research project.

The doctoral thesis will be carried o
ut under the supervision of Vincenzo De Risi, of the Laboratoire SPHère, an
d other specialists in the research themes.

The following documents a
re required from the candidate:

1) CV

2) A proposal for the res
earch project the student wishes to carry out over the three-year period (m
ax. 5 pages). It may be written in French, English, German or Italian.
<
p>3) A sample text, approx. 10-20 pages, written by the candidate on the hi
story or philosophy of science (e.g., a section of the Master's thesis).

4) If the student does not yet hold a master's degree, a letter from a
faculty member stating that it is likely that they will graduate by Septemb
er 2024.

Application website: <a href="https://emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/
