SUMMARY:Situating universalisms. The transnational construction of Homo sapiens in the XX century
LOCATION:Rome\, Ecole française de Rome
DESCRIPTION:What we shall tentatively term the 'Homos sapiens paradigm' emerged in the
aftermath of the Second World War as a means of ensuring the sustainability
of the restored peace. The 1950 UNESCO Statement on Race and its subsequen
t, numerous reformulations rested on two key universalist characteristics o
f the international organisation: the common origin of all human beings in
Homo sapiens; and the idea of science as a universal way of knowing. This w
orkshop aims to discuss the transnational construction of this paradigm, as
well as the scientific and cultural artefacts that helped establish it fro
m the 1920s onwards. To this end, we will examine the involvement of scient
ists both within their national scientific contexts, and in international s
 cientific networks and programmes.\n \nhttps://www.efrome.it/la-recherche/a
