d=FR2zHxo8T7GAWyXWy2A4AeVUgbgdF1.1"The Multiverse: A Historical and Cultura
l Perspective"Abstract.\nI will examine the debate on the possible existenc
e of other universes—what is now commonly referred to as the “multiverse”—f
rom a distinctive historical and cultural perspective. Rather than attempti
ng a comprehensive survey of the topic, I will focus on three literary work
s: Eureka by Edgar Allan Poe and two of Plutarch’s dialogues, De Facie quae
in Orbe Lunae apparet and De Defectu Oraculorum. Through an analysis of th
eir scientific content and sources, I will explore how these texts illumina
te key aspects of cosmological debate in antiquity and in the nineteenth ce
ntury. This approach highlights the enduring legacy of classical ideas and
knowledge in the development of modern science and culture. Finally, I will
consider the relationship between contemporary discussions of the multiver
se and their earlier historical counterparts.\n* Le Serpieri Lectures è un
ciclo di seminari rivolti principalmente alla formazione dei dottorandi del
Dottorato ReMeST che fanno ricerca in differenti aree: Scienze chimiche, S
cienze della terra, Scienze matematiche e informatiche, Ingegneria industri
