Abstract.
I will exam ine the debate on the possible existence of other universes—what is now com monly referred to as the “multiverse”—from a distinctive historical and cul tural perspective. Rather than attempting a comprehensive survey of the top ic, I will focus on three literary works: Eureka by Edga r Allan Poe and two of Plutarch’s dialogues, De Facie quae in Orbe Lunae apparet and De Defectu Oraculorum. Through a n analysis of their scientific content and sources, I will explore how thes e texts illuminate key aspects of cosmological debate in antiquity and in t he nineteenth century. This approach highlights the enduring legacy of clas sical ideas and knowledge in the development of modern science and culture. Finally, I will consider the relationship between contemporary discussions of the multiverse and their earlier historical counterparts.
