La riflessione si concentra sulle modalità attraverso cui pratiche sperimenta li, strumenti e contesti ambientali hanno contribuito alla genesi e allo sv iluppo del pensiero tecnico-scientifico e naturalistico, nonché alla trasfo rmazione nel tempo delle conoscenze, della natura, del sé, della mente, dei corpi e della società.\nL’Aquila e il suo territorio offrono uno scenario emblematico per questo tipo di approccio. Da un lato, siti archeologici tar do-antichi e medievali – come quello di Amiternum – documentano la presenza di infrastrutture idrauliche e impianti per la lavorazione dei metalli, tr a cui una fornace per la fusione di campane del XIII secolo e impianti fuso ri del VI secolo. On one hand, late antique and medieval archaeological sites—such as Amit ernum—document the presence of hydraulic infrastructures and metalworking f acilities, including a 13th-century bell foundry and 6th-century smelting p lants. On the other hand, the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS)—on e of the world’s leading centers for experimental physics—testify to the co ntinuity and renewal of relationships between matter, technique, and knowle dge in the contemporary world.\nThe SISS National Conference thus aims to h ighlight the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature of the concept of transformation in its various cultural and disciplinary interpretations and to explore the interactions and intersections among different fields of knowledge—from the history of science to technical archaeology, from envir onmental studies to the history of technology, and from museology to gender studies and history of medicine. Nell’anno in cui L’Aqui la è Capitale Italiana della Cultura, la Società Italiana di Storia della S cienza (SISS) è lieta di invitarvi a partecipare al Convegno Nazionale che si terrà dal 27 al 29 maggio 2026 (gita sociale 30 maggio) presso il Dipart imento di Scienze Umane dell’Università dell’Aquila, in una delle sedi univ ersitarie storiche del centro cittadino.

Conference registrations must be submitted by 3 April 2026 using the registration form that will be provided upon acceptance of a contribution. The conference registration fee is €30 for all SISS members ( if in good standing with the payment of the annual membership fee for 2026) . For non-members, it will be possible to attend the conference upon joinin g the SISS as a new member (https://www.socie tastoriadellascienza.it/index.php/it/iscriviti). On 27 May 2026, only the Members’ Meeting will be held in dual mode.

For t hose who wish to attend, the social dinner will take place on 28 May, and o n 30 May a day trip around L’Aquila will be organised. Additional informati on on both events will be provided in the registration form.

The SISS 2026 Early Career Prize will be awarded at the conference.
