DESCRIZIONE SINTETICA DEL PROGETTO DI RICERCA: La storia della ricezione della teoria eliocentrica proposta da N iccolò Copernico (1473-1543) nel suo De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (1 543) è stata oggetto di numerose ricerche fin dalla fine del XIX secolo. Un a buona parte dell’interesse suscitato dalla storia delle idee copernicane deriva dal presunto conflitto che esse generarono tra astronomi e autorità ecclesiastiche. Questo dibattito però finora è stato visto soltanto da un p unto di vista esegetico, trascurando il ruolo giocato dalle diverse assunzi oni epistemologiche. Tra i seguaci di Copernico fu accettato il principio b iblico dell’accomodamento per limitare l’autorità delle Scritture all’ambit o etico e religioso, escludendo l’uso dei testi scritturali in materia di f ilosofia, cosmologia e astronomia. Sebbene quasi tutti i copernicani condiv idessero il principio dell’accomodamento, vi fecero tuttavia ricorso in con testi teorici e discorsivi diversi, a seconda delle loro concezioni della n atura, dei metodi e del ruolo che attribuirono alla ricerca scientifica. Il progetto di ricerca, quindi, sarà incentrato sui diversi modi in cui i cop ernicani, in base alle loro opinioni sulla natura della conoscenza e sulla gerarchia delle discipline, impiegarono il principio biblico dell’accomodam ento.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT: The history of the reception of the heliocentric theory proposed b y Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) in his De revolutionibus orbium coelestiu m (1543) has been the subject of extensive studies since the late 19th cent ury. A good deal of the interest expressed in the history of Copernican ide as has derived from the supposed conflict that they generated between - 34 - astronomers and ecclesiastical authorities. This debate, however, has so far been regarded only from an exegetical point of view, overlooking the ro le played by different epistemological assumptions. Among Copernicus’ follo wers, the biblical principle of accommodation was accepted to limit the aut hority of Scripture to the ethical and religious domain, excluding the use of scriptural texts in matters of philosophy, cosmology and astronomy. Alth ough almost all Copernicans shared the principle of accommodation, they nev ertheless had recourse to it in different theoretical and discursive contex ts, according to their conceptions of nature, methods, and the role they as cribed to scientific research. The research project, therefore, will focus on the different ways in which the Copernicans, according to their views on the nature of knowledge and the hierarchy of disciplines, employed the bib lical principle of accommodation.
