Serpieri Lectures
Via Aurelio Saffi, 42 – Urbino
Abstract.
I will examine the debate on the possible existence of other universes—what is now commonly referred to as the “multiverse”—from a distinctive historical and cultural perspective. Rather than attempting a comprehensive survey of the topic, I will focus on three literary works: Eureka by Edgar Allan Poe and two of Plutarch’s dialogues, De Facie quae in Orbe Lunae apparet and De Defectu Oraculorum. Through an analysis of their scientific content and sources, I will explore how these texts illuminate key aspects of cosmological debate in antiquity and in the nineteenth century. This approach highlights the enduring legacy of classical ideas and knowledge in the development of modern science and culture. Finally, I will consider the relationship between contemporary discussions of the multiverse and their earlier historical counterparts.
